Benefits

Dates are the sweet fruits of the date-palm, a tree native to the Arabian Peninsula, Middle East and North Africa. Naturally sun-sweet, sun- ripined and sun-dried, dates are one of the most popular fruits packed with an impressive list of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Because dates contain loads of nutrients, they have been called the "Bread of the Desert" as they have sustained many tribes throughout rigid climates when food was scarce. They are great energy boosters with naturally occurring sugars such as fructose, glucose and sucrose that provide the body with loads of energy

Dates are the sweet fruits of the date-palm, a tree native to the Arabian Peninsula, Middle East and North Africa, though its exact place of origin is unknown due to its long history of cultivation -that some believe to go as far back as 7000 BC.  Dates are full of nutrients, so much so that they have been dubbed the "Bread of the Desert" as they have sustained many tribes throughout rigid climates when food was scarce.

Deglet Nour 's literal translation from Arabic is "Date of Light" which is a type of date that, at its best, is so translucent its seed can be seen through the flesh when held up to the light. It is soft to the touch, with medium sweetness akin to honey and a pleasant nutty aftertaste. Considered one of the best dates in the world and often referred to as "Queen of Dates," Deglet Nour originated from the inland oases of Algeria, most predominantly the province of Biskra (where our dates come from!) and were introduced in the seventeenth century to Tunisia, and to the United States (California, Arizona & Texas) at the turn of the twentieth century.

Medjool dates have often been referred to as "King of the dates" as they are exceptionally large with a darker coloration, extremely sweet and contain a large amount of "fruit meat." Whereas Deglet Nour dates are smaller, have a translucent blond-like color and a soft honey taste.

Dates can be found in stores year round, though the harvest season is generally from October through December. This holds true of our Deglet Nour from Algeria. Dates should be stored in cool dry places to retain a maximum of flavor and nutrients; such as in a sealed  Ziploc bag inside a refrigerator, where they can be lept for upto a year. Or better yet, they can be frozen in order to maintain their fresh softness even longer.

Dates had initially been used as a staple for breaking fasts throughout the Arabian Peninsula. It has eventually developed into becoming a food of multi-purpose such as a snack or a desert when served fresh. It has progressively found itself to be used for several things like milkshake and sweets in eiher itts fresh form or ground powder.

Dates have been praised from ancient times for their numerous health benefits in both religious texts and traditional medicine. The USDA Nutrient Database notes that dates are high in nutrients, particularly the minerals potassium and calcium. In addition, dates contains a high amount of fiber.  Because dates are an energy-dense food packed with carbohydrates including sucrose, fructose and glucose, it makes them a good food for boosting energy quickly

WHAT  DO YOU KNOW ABOUT "CAROB"?

What is Carob?
Uses
Cocoa vs Carob Powder
Why eat carob?
Carob for digestive issues

The carob tree, or Ceratonia siliqua, has fruit that looks like a dark brown pea pod, which carries pulp and seeds. It has been in cultivation for at least 4000 years in the Mediterranean region.  The plant was well known to the ancient Greeks, who planted seeds of this plant in Greece and Italy. This plant is also called St. John's bread or locust bean because the pods were once thought to have been the "locusts" that were eaten by John the Baptist in the Wilderness.

Because carob is naturally sweet and a great alternative substitute for chocolate, you can enjoy your favorite sweet treats like fudge, smoothies, carob bar and brownies. The most common use for carob is in food. When cooking, you can substitute carob for chocolate in a 1-to-1 ratio.  Carob tastes similar to chocolate and is a great alternative because it has:
•    Lot of fiber
•    Antioxidants
•    Low amounts of fat and sugar
•    No caffeine
•    No gluten
•    No theobromine

Carob
•    Has twice the amount of calcium compared to cocoa?
•    Is free of a migraine-triggering compound
•    Is caffeine- and fat-free

Cocoa
•    Contains oxalic acid, which interferes with calcium absorption
•    Can trigger migraines in some people
•    Is high in sodium and fat

Adding carob to your diet can provide you with numerous health benefits. Since carob is naturally high in fiber and has no caffeine, it’s ideal for people with high blood pressure. The low sugar and fat content also make it a great dietary addition or chocolate substitution for people looking to lose weight. The high levels of vitamins, such as vitamins A and B-2, are good for your skin and eye health.
Adding or substituting carob into your diet can help:
•    lower your cholesterol
•    reduce your risk of heart disease

•    ease stomach issues
•    treat diarrhea

You may want to look into eating carob if you have digestive issues. Carob’s tannins, which are dietary compounds found in plants, are different from regular plant tannins. Regular plant tannins dissolve in water and prevent digestion, but carob’s tannins don’t. Rather, they have a drying effect on the digestive tract that helps tackle toxins and prevent harmful bacterial growth in the intestines.
